Reunion Update: What to Expect, Pt.1 (The Right Attitude)

Many of you might still be wondering what you should be expecting at our reunion... To clarify, NO carnal show-offs will be allowed. Here's what we mean. Although many of you will come with plenty to gloat about, we simply ask that you show-off about the right things. While we highly discourage you to show-off about your new Mercedes, your Masters Degree, or even that six bedroom Manor you inherited, we encourage you to show-off about the things that really matter.

Show-off your children, a significant other, or even a pet. You might even want to show-off a story of victory, triumph, survival, adventure, transformation, renewal, or struggle.

Yes, we understand that personal success stories will be told, but please don't let that be the first thing that rolls off your tongue. Say hi, learn something about someone, and have fun playing catch-up. In times of change and economic struggle, boasting about the material world will only make you look shallow.

Backstreet Berto

In 1999, the Backstreet Boys dominated the pop charts with a little diddy titled, “I Want It That Way.” At the height of the band’s career, girls went to great lengths to get a piece of the Max Martin produced, hit-making machine.

That very same year, I, Roberto Comparan, got hired to work at a Jostens' Summer Camp. At the end of the camp session, our Jostens’ Camp Yearbook team mimicked the boy band, capitalized on the band’s success and victimized a congregate of pubescent teens with a spoof performance.

I must apologize in advance. The moves you are about to see might leave you feeling nauseous. They are over-the-top and simply, silly.

To my former coworkers, Crystal, Tony, Rob and Shawn, I am aware that this is a bit incriminating. Thank you for comprising your integrity alongside me. Class of 1999, go ahead, laugh at me! I bet you never seen me gyrate like this before?

1999: Pop Cultural Trends

Napster, Blogger, The Matrix, Britney Spears, and TRL were just a few pop cultural phenomena that began to redefine how we would buy music, share stories, view fight sequences in films, listen to radio, and interact with people in our adults years.

For better or for worse, there's no denying how these brands transformed industries ten years later. What kind of impact have some of these brands, systems, films, people, or shows had on your life since 1999?

Do You Remember Our Class Song?

You may or may not recall that our class song was Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)". The song was not only featured on our Baccalaureate "video" reflection, but was also performed at graduation by then high school senior, Greg Carter.

Although most critics believed that Green Day was losing relevance post our 1999 graduation, the band reignited their career in 2004 with the "punk rock opera", American Idiot. The album went on to win several Grammy's in 2005 and 2006. It also snagged many Moon-Man at the 2005 MTV Awards. By 2007, the band had recorded a version of The Simpsons theme for The Simpsons Movie, as well as made an appearance in the movie. Thus proving the band still had a lot to say ten years later.
